garden3d
Head of Marketing & Communications (House of Brands)
Tell the garden3d story like it deserves to be told. We’re hiring a Head of Marketing & Communications to shape what we publish, where it shows up, and how it lands—across our Substack, podcast, Instagram, X, paid social, websites, and every vertical under the garden3d umbrella. This is a high-taste, high-accountability role where you’ll turn studio work into content people actually care about—and you’ll protect quality like it’s part of the job description (because it is).
Best part: you can be based anywhere. We’re decentralized by default, with a natural pull toward New York—so if you’re in Europe, Singapore, Chicago, or elsewhere, we’d still love to meet you.
About garden3d
garden3d is a worker-owned creative collective innovating across brands and IRL communities, IoT devices, and cross-platform apps. We share profit, open source everything, spin out new businesses, and invest in exciting ideas through financial and/or in-kind contributions.
Our client and collaborator roster includes Google, Stripe, Figma, Hinge, Black Socialists in America, ACLU, Pratt, Parsons, Mozilla, The Nobel Prize, MIT, Gnosis, Etsy, and Gagosian.
We’re also the software team behind innovative products like The Light Phone and Mill, and we operate a global, decentralized community space collective called Index Space.
We build with care: a happy, talented, and diverse studio culture; work that brings value to the world; and a genuine curiosity about life outside of the job.
The garden3d Ecosystem (House of Brands)
- Sanctuary Computer — Development
A technology shop built around close collaboration between client and craftsperson, spanning design-forward websites, robust web apps, and native mobile development. - XXIX — Design
A design studio founded in 2013, built on autonomy, growth, transparency, and shared responsibility—continually asking what a creative practice can be. - Index Space — Community
A network of physical spaces worldwide that enables the exchange of knowledge and tools, nurturing trust through generosity and abundance of ideas. - USB Club — Digital Community
A digital community channel we activate and grow through programming, drops, and ongoing engagement. - garden3d TK — Media
A young experimental media company exploring emerging themes at the intersection of technology, design, and culture—ambition includes monetization, books, screenplays, and music.
And underneath it all: the garden3d umbrella itself—one coherent story with many distinct voices.
About The Role
The garden3d Head of Marketing & Communications has one mandate:
Make sure everything we put on the internet is compelling and interesting.
garden3d is a house of brands—each studio needs its own voice, its own audience, and its own drumbeat of work worth sharing. Working closely with our founder & president Hugh Francis, you’ll decide what we make, where it runs, and whether it clears our bar.
You’ll interface across disciplines—studio leads, designers, developers, editors, animators, photographers, community managers, event producers, and ad platforms—then quickly context shift between wildly different workstreams to find the most compelling stories and get them produced at an exceptionally high standard.
This role owns channels end to end: the garden3d Substack, our podcast, Instagram, X, and the paid accounts behind them. You’ll collaborate with our team and a rotating cast of freelance editors, designers, and animators, and you’ll run the calendar that keeps multiple workstreams shipping on time.
You think in PESO terms (Paid, Earned, Shared, Owned)—with a deliberate emphasis on shared and owned media. Paid is a tool, not the point. Traditional press is a bonus, not the primary path.
And the ambition runs beyond marketing a services business. garden3d TK is our experimental media engine: books, screenplays, music, activations—essentially a record label for ideas. If you look at a worker-owned collective with multiple studios, a network of community spaces, and an open P&L and think, “This is the best content brief on the internet,” you’ll fit right in.
What You’ll Do
Quality never less than 8/10. We aspire to 10/10, celebrate 9/10, and never publish anything that isn’t an 8/10—visually, narratively, and in production quality. You’ll set and protect that standard across every post, video, essay, and episode across every garden3d vertical.
- Own our content quality bar—you’ll rather kill a piece than let a “6” ship.
- Improve work without micromanaging—your feedback makes things better and faster while respecting the craft of the people producing it.
Social that stops the scroll. You’ll maintain a practitioner-level understanding of how each platform works right now:
- What arrests someone mid-scroll
- How a hook earns the next three seconds
- Why a format lands on TikTok and dies on LinkedIn
- Why short-form video is first-class craft—not an afterthought
A house of brands, each in its own voice. You’ll manage multiple messaging columns at once:
- Keep Sanctuary Computer from sounding like XXIX
- Keep Index Space from sounding like either
- Maintain umbrella coherence so the garden3d story stays consistent
Case study production as a growth engine. Every client engagement across our creative agencies should end in a case study worth reading.
- Interview the team and shape the narrative
- Art-direct assets and ensure the story is compelling and true
- Ship case studies that earn the next project for each studio
Web presence that puts our best foot forward. Our websites are often the first touchpoint for prospective clients and hires.
- Own site strategy, messaging, and clarity
- Ensure each studio’s capabilities are communicated sharply
- Keep sites, decks, and collateral current as the work evolves
Editorial ownership. You’ll run the editorial systems for:
- Substack
- Podcast
- Transparency publications (including our annual open-source P&L release)
You’ll manage:
- The calendar and standards
- Growth strategy and iterative improvement
- How we capture what happens in our spaces (Index, USB Club, and community around them) and turn it into work worth sharing
Producing, paid & distribution—like a showrunner. You’ll direct producers, editors, and freelancers with clear briefs and real deadlines.
- Make sure multiple workstreams move at once without quality dropping
- Set up briefs that are specific, actionable, and aligned to the standard
- Run paid spend on Meta, Instagram, and wherever our audiences live
- Build audiences and run A/B/C tests on narrative and ad sets
- Own budgets against results you can clearly report
Data-driven reporting & ROI. You’ll measure what our content actually does and report it plainly.
- Audience growth
- Engagement
- Leads and pipeline influenced
- Return on paid spend, organic effort, and production time
- Next-quarter planning anchored in the numbers
Presence IRL. garden3d shows up in person—events, conferences, talks, Index programming, and gatherings where our world meets.
- Choose which touchpoints are worth our time
- Help us show up looking like ourselves
- Bring back stories worth publishing
Culture. You’ll model garden3d values of partnership, curiosity, and accountability. People do their best work here because feedback is honest, recognition is real, and taste is shared.
Special Projects (Examples of What You May Lead)
Beyond day-to-day responsibilities, this role may spearhead or support initiatives like:
- Turning garden3d TK into a real experimental media brand—books, screenplays, music, and shows
- Growing the podcast into a property with its own audience
- Launch campaigns for new Index spaces, USB Club drops, and community programs
- Making the annual open-source P&L release a media moment
- Standing up a small content studio that serves all four studios’ new-business pipelines
- Building the systems (and hiring the people) that let us publish more often—while still aiming for 10/10 content and never dropping below 8/10
What We’re Looking For
This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to create real impact in a growing, dynamic organization—someone who’s comfortable taking responsibility, making taste-based decisions, and shipping at a high bar.
Must Have
- 8+ years in marketing, content, or brand leadership—with real time inside creative studios, agencies, or founder-led companies
- A portfolio that demonstrates exceptional taste—visual, narrative, and tone of voice
- Design background and/or fluency producing visual assets at the required quality level in Figma when necessary
- Experience owning a company’s web presence: site strategy, messaging, and keeping collateral current
- Exceptional project management: content calendars, production pipelines, and handling many workstreams at once
- Short-form video fluency: you’ve shipped work for Reels, TikTok, and Shorts—and you can explain why pieces performed
- Comfort managing creatives and producers (editors, designers, animators, freelancers) and consistently getting better work out of them than they’d make alone
- Hands-on paid social experience (Meta, Instagram, and beyond): audience building, budget ownership, and A/B/C testing across narrative and ad sets
- Working fluency in PESO with a point of view on where paid, earned, shared, and owned media each earn their keep
Nice-to-Have
- Experience producing a brand’s IRL presence (events, conferences, talks) and turning it into content
- Podcast or audio production experience
- Comfort managing multiple messaging columns in a house of brands
- Newsletter growth experience—Substack especially
- Community & events marketing (programming, launches, IRL moments)
- Photography, motion, or editing chops of your own
- Fluency with AI production tools + strong judgment about when not to use them
- A press & media network (traditional PR isn’t the focus, but relationships help)
- Experience marketing to design & engineering decision-makers (think clients like ours)
- Book publishing or long-form media experience
- Experience scaling a services business story into a consumer-scale audience
Who You Are
- Happy, relaxed, and easy to work with
- Comfortable with transparency and non-dictatorial leadership
- Flexible on most things—
