Head of Marketing & Communications — garden3d
Own the story. Make it irresistible.
garden3d is hiring a Head of Marketing & Communications to ensure everything we publish online is compelling, crafted, and worth people’s attention. You’ll be the person who spots the best moments across our studios and community spaces, turns them into standout content, and builds a channel system that grows audiences—while keeping our quality bar locked at 8/10 minimum (and aiming for 10/10).
You can be based anywhere in the world. We’re decentralized by design, with a meaningful pull toward New York—but Europe, Singapore, Chicago, and beyond are all absolutely on the table if you’re the right operator.
About garden3d
garden3d is a worker-owned creative collective innovating across brands and IRL communities, IoT devices, and cross-platform apps. We share profit, publish open source, spin out new businesses, and invest in exciting ideas through financial and/or in-kind contributions.
Our client roster includes Google, Stripe, Figma, Hinge, Black Socialists in America, ACLU, Pratt, Parsons, Mozilla, The Nobel Prize, MIT, Gnosis, Etsy, and Gagosian.
We’re also the software team behind innovative products like The Light Phone and Mill, and we operate a global, decentralized community space collective called Index Space.
We care deeply about studio culture—happy, talented, and diverse—and we balance serious craft with genuine curiosity about life outside of work. We’re building projects that bring value to the world, and we do it with transparency, autonomy, and shared responsibility.
What You’re Joining (The garden3d Ecosystem)
garden3d isn’t one brand—it’s a house of brands, plus a growing experimental media outlet.
- Sanctuary Computer — Development: building a different type of technology shop with close collaboration between client and craftsperson. Projects range from design-forward websites to robust web apps and native mobile development.
- XXIX — Design: a design studio founded in 2013, built around autonomy, growth, transparency, and shared responsibility.
- Index Space — Community: a network of physical spaces worldwide that enables the exchange of knowledge, tools, and ideas.
- USB Club — Digital Community: a digital community with its own cadence and audience.
- garden3d TK — Media: an experimental media company in early stages, exploring emerging themes across technology, design, and culture—aiming to monetize through books, screenplays, and music.
We work across multiple verticals, and your job is to make sure each one has its own voice, audience, and drumbeat of work worth sharing—while keeping the umbrella story coherent.
About The Role
The Head of Marketing & Communications at garden3d has one mandate:
Make sure everything we put on the internet is compelling and interesting.
You’ll work closely with our founder & president Hugh Francis, helping decide:
- What we make (and what we don’t)
- Where it runs
- Whether it clears our bar
This is a role for someone who can context shift naturally across diverse workstreams, find the most compelling stories, and lead production at an exceptionally high standard.
Channels you’ll own end-to-end: the garden3d Substack, podcast, Instagram, X, and the paid accounts behind them.
What You’ll Do
1) Set and defend the quality bar (8/10 minimum)
- Hold the bar across every post, video, essay, and episode across all verticals.
- Operate with a “kill it before you ship a 6” mindset.
- Provide feedback that improves output without micromanaging the people doing the making.
- Make “better and faster” the default by strengthening taste, clarity, and production flow.
2) Social that stops the scroll
- Maintain a practitioner-level understanding of how platforms perform right now.
- Know what arrests someone mid-scroll and how to earn the next three seconds.
- Understand why formats succeed on TikTok and struggle on LinkedIn (and vice versa).
- Treat short-form video as first-class craft, not an afterthought.
3) Manage a house of brands—each with its own voice
- Ensure Sanctuary Computer, XXIX, Index, and the umbrella story don’t sound interchangeable.
- Keep messaging columns distinct while maintaining narrative coherence across the garden3d ecosystem.
- Collaborate with studio leads so the “why it matters” is accurate and compelling—not generic.
4) Build case study production that wins the next project
- Own a production line where each client engagement ends in a case study worth reading.
- Interview teams, shape narrative, and art-direct assets.
- Ship case studies that strengthen each studio’s pipeline and reputation.
5) Lead web presence strategy and keep it sharp
- Own strategy behind each garden3d site: what it says, what work it shows, and how clearly it communicates each studio’s capabilities.
- Keep sites, decks, and collateral current as the work evolves.
- Ensure first impressions (clients and hires) reflect the quality and clarity we actually deliver.
6) Editorial ownership across owned media
- Run the editorial calendar and standards for the Substack, podcast, and transparency publications (including our open-source P&L release).
- Capture and translate the real energy of our spaces—Index, USB Club, and community programs—into work worth sharing.
- Grow owned audiences with strong storytelling, consistency, and clear editorial direction.
7) Producing, paid, and distribution—like a showrunner
- Direct producers, editors, and freelancers with showrunner-level clarity: briefs are crisp, deadlines are real.
- Run multiple workstreams simultaneously without sacrificing quality.
- Brief, schedule, and coordinate production so content ships on time and meets standards.
Paid media ownership:
- Run paid spend on Meta/Instagram and other platforms where our audiences live.
- Build audiences and run A/B/C testing across narrative and ad set.
- Own budgets against results you can explain and report.
8) Data-driven reporting & ROI
- Measure what content actually does: audience growth, engagement, leads, and pipeline influenced.
- Judge paid spend, organic effort, and production time by return—not vibes.
- Report plainly and use the numbers to shape next quarter’s plan.
9) Presence IRL (and bringing it back as content)
- Help garden3d show up in-person: events, conferences, talks, Index programming, and community gatherings.
- Decide which touchpoints are worth the time and represent us properly.
- Capture stories that can become publishable content afterward.
10) Model garden3d culture
- Lead with partnership, curiosity, and accountability.
- Create an environment where producers and creatives do the best work of their careers.
- Make feedback honest, recognition real, and taste transferable.
Special Projects (What You May Lead Next)
Beyond day-to-day ownership, you’ll likely spearhead or support projects like:
- Turning garden3d TK into a real experimental media brand: books, screenplays, music, and shows.
- Growing the podcast into a property with its own audience.
- Launching campaigns for new Index spaces, USB Club drops, and community programs.
- Making our annual open-source P&L release a true media moment.
- Standing up a small content studio that serves all four studios’ new-business pipelines.
- Building the systems (and hiring the people) that let us publish more often—while aspiring for 10/10 content and never dropping below 8/10.
What We’re Looking For
Must Have
- 8+ years in marketing, content, or brand leadership—ideally with real time inside creative studios, agencies, or founder-led companies.
- A portfolio that proves exceptional taste—visual, narrative, and tone of voice.
- Design background and/or fluency producing visual assets at the required quality level in Figma when necessary.
- Experience owning a company’s web presence: site strategy, messaging, and keeping capabilities collateral current.
- Exceptional project management: content calendars, production pipelines, and multiple workstreams at once.
- Short-form video fluency: you’ve shipped work for Reels, TikTok, and Shorts—and can explain why pieces performed.
- Extensive experience managing creatives and producers (editors, designers, animators, freelancers) and getting better outcomes than they’d make alone.
- Hands-on paid social experience on Meta/Instagram (and beyond): audience building, budget ownership, and A/B/C testing across narrative and ad sets.
- Working fluency in the PESO model (paid, earned, shared, owned) with a point of view on where each earns its keep.
Nice-to-Have
- Experience producing a brand’s IRL presence: events, conferences, talks, and turning that into content.
- Podcast or audio production experience.
- Comfort managing multiple messaging columns in a house of brands.
- Newsletter growth experience—especially Substack.
- Community & events marketing: programming, launches, and IRL moments.
- Photography, motion, or editing chops of your own.
- Fluency with AI production tools—plus the judgment to know when not to use them.
- A press & media network (traditional PR isn’t the focus, but relationships help).
- Experience marketing to design and engineering decision-makers (think: clients like Google/Stripe/Figma caliber).
- Book publishing or long-form media experience.
- Experience growing a services business’s story into a consumer-scale audience.
Who You Are
- Happy, relaxed, and easy to work with.
- You appreciate transparency and non-dictatorial leadership.
- You’re flexible on everything except needless “conceits” that compromise quality.
- You
