Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Postdoctoral Research Associate: Quantum Information Science
Join a team pushing the frontiers of quantum information and computational physics. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work at the exciting intersection of tensor networks, quantum information science, and quantum algorithmic analysis—with the goal of turning deep theory into practical tools for the physical sciences, from condensed-matter to high-energy physics and beyond.
This is a great opportunity if you thrive on rigorous research, enjoy building new methods, and want your work to connect directly to real scientific challenges.
About The Role
As a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Quantum Information Science at ORNL, you’ll contribute to research that spans theory and computation. Your work will focus on developing and analyzing quantum algorithms and methods, leveraging tensor network techniques and quantum information frameworks to address problems across multiple domains of physics and data-driven science.
Requisition ID: 16262
What You’ll Do
- Conduct original research at the intersection of tensor networks and quantum information science.
- Develop and perform quantum algorithmic analysis to understand performance, limits, and structure of quantum methods.
- Explore how tensor network-based approaches can support quantum algorithm design and analysis.
- Work on applications spanning condensed-matter physics and high-energy physics, where quantum methods and information-theoretic tools are essential.
- Extend research to data science applications where quantum-inspired or quantum-informed techniques can add value.
- Collaborate with researchers across disciplines to connect theoretical advances to computational and physical science problems.
- Communicate progress through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and internal technical discussions.
- Maintain active engagement with the broader research community through conferences and scientific collaborations.
What We’re Looking For
- A Ph.D. in a relevant field such as quantum information science, theoretical physics, computational physics, computer science (theory/quantum), or a closely related discipline.
- Strong research background in one or more of the following:
- Tensor networks (e.g., matrix product states/operators, PEPS, or related frameworks)
- Quantum information theory (e.g., entanglement, quantum channels, complexity, or information measures)
- Quantum algorithms and algorithmic analysis (including theoretical performance, complexity, and structure)
- Connections to condensed-matter, high-energy physics, or data science
- Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality research outcomes (e.g., publications, preprints, or strong conference contributions).
- Comfort working independently while also collaborating in a team environment.
- Excellent communication skills—able to explain complex ideas clearly to both specialists and cross-disciplinary partners.
Why Oak Ridge National Laboratory?
ORNL is a place where ambitious scientific ideas meet real-world impact. You’ll be part of a research culture that values depth, rigor, and collaboration—supporting work that can influence how quantum technologies and quantum-inspired methods evolve across disciplines.
Benefits
- Competitive postdoctoral compensation aligned with experience and qualifications.
- Access to world-class research infrastructure and a collaborative scientific environment.
- Opportunities to publish and present your work in leading forums.
- Support for professional growth through engagement with a broad scientific community.
