Freelance 2D Background Artist (YouTube Animation) — Remote
Newscape Studios is building and expanding our animation pipeline across a network of dozen YouTube channels and 10M+ total subscribers. We create game-inspired content (Fortnite, Minecraft, and more) as well as original animations for a young audience—where visual storytelling and production speed both matter.
We’re looking for a Freelance 2D Background Artist to help bring our worlds to life. If you love crafting immersive environments, can hit daily production quotas, and bring strong Photoshop fundamentals, we want to see your portfolio.
About The Role
This is a remote / work-from-home Independent Contractor position supporting an animation-focused production team. You’ll be responsible for producing finalized 2D background environments and background props that are ready for full production use.
What You’ll Do
- Produce and finalize 2D environment backgrounds and background props for production-ready use
- Maintain an organized, efficient workflow to support a fast-moving animation pipeline
- Meet daily quotas during the production week
- Target output of approximately 25 environments per week (final volume may vary based on your skill and experience)
- Adapt to multiple styles to match the look of the specific animation channels we support
- Collaborate with the team by communicating clearly and listening to direction
- Ensure consistency and attention to detail across environments, lighting, color, and composition

We’ll expect your work to align with the visual style of our channels. Please review the following for tone and environment expectations:
What We’re Looking For
- Strong Adobe Creative Suite skills, especially Adobe Photoshop
- Experience using Procreate and/or Illustrator is a plus (and Procreate proficiency is specifically valued)
- Toon Boom knowledge is a plus, but not required
- Solid understanding of composition, perspective, color theory, and light & form
- Ability to adapt to a variety of styles as required by different projects
- Team collaboration mindset with effective communication
- Great listening skills and ability to take feedback and apply it quickly
- Strong time management and comfort working to deadlines + daily quotas
- High attention to detail and consistency across deliverables
Qualifications & Portfolio Requirements
- Portfolio required to be considered
- Portfolio should demonstrate your ability to create finalized environments and background props with strong fundamentals (composition, perspective, lighting, color)
- Freelance experience is beneficial, especially production work with turnaround expectations
Compensation
- $800.00 per production week
- Payment structure is tied to production week deliverables and quota expectations
