Head of Marketing & Communications

Head of Marketing & Communications — garden3d

Make the garden3d story impossible to ignore. We’re looking for a Head of Marketing & Communications to shape what we publish, where it lives, and how it lands—across Substack, podcast, Instagram, X, and the paid channels that help us reach the right people. If you can spot the moment, craft the narrative, and hold the quality bar to 10/10 (while never letting anything ship below 8/10), you’ll feel at home here.

You can be based anywhere. Some of our studios and community gravity pull toward New York, but we work across time zones and hire globally—Europe, Singapore, Chicago, or wherever you are.

About garden3d

garden3d is a worker-owned creative collective innovating across brands and IRL communities, IoT devices, and cross-platform apps. We share profit, open source everything, spin out new businesses, and invest in exciting ideas through financial and/or in-kind contributions.

Our client roster includes Google, Stripe, Figma, Hinge, ACLU, MIT, Mozilla, Etsy, and more—alongside organizations like Black Socialists in America and The Nobel Prize.

We also operate as the software team behind products like The Light Phone and Mill, and we run a global, decentralized community space collective called Index Space.

We think of garden3d as a collective for creative people, prioritizing a happy, talented, and diverse studio culture. We work on projects that bring value to the world, balancing deep care for the work with real curiosity about life outside of our jobs.

What You’ll Be Leading (The garden3d Ecosystem)

garden3d isn’t one brand—it’s a house of brands, each with its own voice, audience, and drumbeat. This role ensures each vertical sounds like itself while the umbrella story stays coherent.

  • Sanctuary Computer — Development
A different kind of technology shop built on close collaboration between client and craftsperson.
  • XXIX — Design
A design studio founded in 2013, built on autonomy, growth, transparency, and shared responsibility.
  • Index Space — Community
A network of physical spaces that supports knowledge/tool exchange and nurtures trust through generosity.
  • USB Club
A digital community with its own energy and audience.
  • garden3d TK — Media
An experimental media company exploring emerging themes across technology, design, and culture—built to become something monetizable and expansive (books, screenplays, music, activations).

About the Role

The garden3d Head of Marketing & Communications has one mandate: make sure everything we put on the internet is compelling and interesting.

Working closely with our founder & president Hugh Francis, you’ll decide what we make, where it runs, and whether it clears our bar. You’ll context shift easily across multiple workstreams, find the most compelling stories, and get them produced at an exceedingly high standard.

This role is global and remote-friendly. It’s also deeply connected to our IRL presence—events, programming, talks, and community moments that generate content worth publishing.

What You’ll Do

You’ll own our channels end to end—strategy, production, distribution, and reporting—working with internal teams and a rotating cast of freelance editors, designers, animators, and producers.

  • Own the content calendar that keeps multiple workstreams shipping on time—without sacrificing quality.
  • Run our owned channels, including:
    • garden3d Substack
    • Podcast
    • Instagram
    • X
  • Direct paid distribution behind those channels, building audiences and testing what works.
  • Think in PESO terms (paid, earned, shared, owned), with a deliberate emphasis on shared and owned media. Traditional press is a bonus—not the core.
  • Interface across verticals with studio leads, designers, developers, editors, animators, photographers, community managers, event producers, and ad platforms.

Key Responsibilities & Mandates

1) Quality Never Less Than 8/10

We aspire to 10/10, celebrate 9/10, and never publish anything that isn’t an 8/10—visually, narratively, and in production quality. You’ll hold that bar across posts, videos, essays, and episodes across every garden3d vertical.

  • Prefer to kill a piece than ship something that’s not ready.
  • Give feedback that improves work faster and better—without micromanaging the creators.
  • Art-direct standards that make the work consistently feel unmistakably garden3d.

2) Social That Stops the Scroll

You’ll bring a practitioner-level understanding of what’s happening on each platform right now—how people get pulled in, what makes them stay, and why certain formats work (or die) in specific contexts.

  • Short-form video is first-class craft here, not an afterthought.
  • You’ll know how a hook earns the next three seconds and why a format performs differently on TikTok vs. LinkedIn.
  • You can explain why content performed (and what to change next).

3) A House of Brands, Each in Its Own Voice

Sanctuary Computer doesn’t sound like XXIX—and Index doesn’t sound like either. You’ll manage multiple messaging columns at once, while keeping the umbrella narrative coherent.

  • Maintain distinct brand tone across verticals.
  • Ensure the umbrella story ties the work together without flattening individuality.

4) Case Study Production

Every client engagement across our creative agencies should end in a case study worth reading. You’ll own that production line.

  • Interview teams and shape the narrative.
  • Art-direct assets and ensure quality across the full case study.
  • Ship case studies that help each studio win its next project.

5) Websites That Put Our Best Foot Forward

Our websites are often the first place prospective clients and hires meet us. You’ll own the strategy behind each garden3d site.

  • Clarify messaging: what we do, who it’s for, and why it matters.
  • Keep sites, decks, and collateral current as capabilities evolve.
  • Ensure visitors immediately understand what each studio can deliver.

6) Editorial Ownership

You’ll run Substack, the podcast, and our transparency publications (including our annual open-source P&L).

  • Own the editorial standards, calendar, and growth approach.
  • Capture what happens in our spaces (Index, USB Club, and surrounding communities).
  • Turn real community moments into work worth sharing.

7) Producing, Paid & Distribution

You’ll direct producers, editors, and freelancers like a showrunner: clear briefs, real deadlines, and multiple workstreams moving at once—without dropping quality.

  • Brief with clarity and set expectations that reduce ambiguity.
  • Run paid spend on Meta/Instagram and wherever our audiences live.
  • Build audiences and run A/B/C tests on:
    • narrative angles
    • ad sets
    • creative variations
  • Own budgets against results we can show.

8) Data-Driven Reporting & ROI

You’ll measure what content actually does—then report it plainly and use it to set next quarter’s plan.

  • Track audience growth, engagement, and leads/pipeline influenced.
  • Evaluate paid spend, organic effort, and production time against return.
  • Turn metrics into decisions, not vanity reporting.

9) Presence IRL

garden3d shows up in person—events, conferences, talks, Index programming, and the dinners/openings where our world gathers.

  • Decide which touchpoints are worth your time.
  • Represent us with the same taste and care you bring online.
  • Capture stories that become publishable content.

10) Culture

You’ll model garden3d values: partnership, curiosity, and accountability. The people you direct do their best work here because feedback is honest, recognition is real, and taste is shared.

  • Lead with transparency and non-dictatorial methods.
  • Make it easy for creatives to do their best work.
  • Build trust through responsiveness and clarity.

Special Projects (Examples of What May Come Next)

In addition to day-to-day ownership, you may spearhead or support projects such as:

  • Turning garden3d TK into a real experimental media brand (books, screenplays, music, shows).
  • Growing the podcast into its own property with a dedicated audience.
  • Launch campaigns for new Index spaces, USB Club drops, and community programs.
  • Making our annual open-source P&L release a media moment.
  • Standing up a small content studio that serves all four studios’ new-business pipelines.
  • Building the systems (and hiring the people) to publish more often while still aspiring to 10/10 content—and never dropping below 8/10.

What We’re Looking For

Must Have

  • 8+ years in marketing, content, or brand leadership—inside creative studios, agencies, or founder-led companies.
  • A portfolio that proves exceptional taste (visual, narrative, and tone of voice).
  • Design background and/or fluency producing your own visual assets at the required quality level in Figma when needed.
  • Experience owning a company’s web presence: site strategy, messaging, and keeping capabilities collateral current.
  • Exceptional project management: content calendars, production pipelines, and multiple workstreams at once.
  • Short-form video fluency: you’ve shipped work for Reels, TikTok, and Shorts—and can articulate why pieces performed.
  • Extensive comfort managing creatives and producers (editors, designers, animators, freelancers) and reliably improving output.
  • Hands-on paid social experience (Meta/Instagram and beyond): audience building, budget ownership, and A/B/C testing across narrative and ad sets.
  • Working fluency in PESO, with a clear point of view on where paid/earned/shared/owned media earn their keep.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience producing a brand’s IRL presence: events, conferences, talks, and turning them into content.
  • Podcast or audio production experience.
  • Comfort managing multiple messaging columns in a house of brands.
  • Newsletter growth experience (especially Substack).
  • Community & events marketing: programming, launches, IRL moments.
  • Photography, motion, or editing chops of your own.
  • Flu
