Head of Marketing & Communications

garden3d

Head of Marketing & Communications (House of Brands)

garden3d is hiring a Head of Marketing & Communications to make sure the stories we tell online are impossible to ignore—compelling, beautifully produced, and consistently worth sharing. You’ll be the person who shapes what we publish, where it lives, and whether it clears our bar (spoiler: it must be 8/10 or better). If you love turning creative work into media—across brands, platforms, and formats—this role is built for you.

Location: You can be based anywhere. We have a strong pull toward New York, but we work across time zones and are excited to hire in Europe, Singapore, Chicago, or wherever you are.

About garden3d

garden3d is a worker-owned creative collective innovating across brands and IRL communities, IoT devices, and cross-platform apps. We share profit, open source everything we can, spin out new businesses, and invest in exciting ideas through financial and/or in-kind contributions.

Our client roster includes Google, Stripe, Figma, Hinge, Black Socialists in America, ACLU, Pratt, Parsons, Mozilla, The Nobel Prize, MIT, Gnosis, Etsy, and Gagosian.

We’re also the software team behind innovative products like The Light Phone and Mill, and we operate a global, decentralized community space collective called Index Space.

We think of garden3d as a collective for creative people—prioritizing a happy, talented, and diverse studio culture. We balance deep care for the work we do with genuine curiosity about life outside of our jobs.

The Ecosystem You’ll Be Marketing

garden3d is a house of brands. Your job isn’t to force one voice across everything—it’s to ensure each vertical has its own drumbeat, audience, and tone, while the umbrella story stays coherent.

  • Sanctuary Computer — Development: A different kind of tech shop built on close collaboration between client and craftsperson, spanning design-forward websites, robust web apps, and native mobile development.
  • XXIX — Design: A design studio founded in 2013 that continually asks what a creative practice can be—operating with autonomy, growth, transparency, and shared responsibility.
  • Index Space — Community: A network of physical spaces worldwide for exchanging knowledge and tools, nurturing trust through generosity and abundance of ideas.
  • USB Club: A digital community.
  • garden3d TK — Media: An experimental media company exploring emerging themes across technology, design, and culture—with plans to monetize via books, screenplays, music, and more.

Plus, our partner organizations include: The Light Phone, Mill, and Ingredient AI.

About The Role

The garden3d Head of Marketing & Communications has one mandate: make sure everything we put on the internet is compelling and interesting.

Working closely with our founder & president, Hugh Francis, you’ll decide what we make, where it runs, and whether it meets our quality standard. This is not “posting for posting’s sake.” It’s editorial, strategic, and production-heavy—built around craft, taste, and accountability.

You’ll interface with studio leads, designers, developers, editors, animators, photographers, community managers, event producers, and ad platforms across every garden3d vertical.

Simply put: you’ll be able to context shift between wildly different workstreams, identify the most compelling stories, and get them produced at an exceptionally high bar.

What You’ll Own (End-to-End)

You’ll run our channels from idea to distribution—collaborating with internal teams and a rotating cast of freelance editors, designers, and animators, while keeping the calendar that helps multiple workstreams ship on time.

  • garden3d Substack
  • Podcast
  • Instagram
  • X
  • Paid accounts behind those channels (and the strategies that drive them)

You’ll think in PESO terms (paid, earned, shared, owned)—with the weight on shared and owned media. Paid is a tool you use deliberately. Traditional press is a bonus, but it’s not where we plan to focus most of our energy.

What You’ll Do

This is a leadership role that blends editorial judgment, marketing strategy, production direction, and performance measurement. You’ll act like a showrunner: clear briefs, real deadlines, and quality that never slips.

  • Set and protect quality standards across every post, video, essay, episode, and campaign—visually, narratively, and in production quality.
  • Carry a practitioner-level understanding of platform behavior: what stops a scroll, how a hook earns the next seconds, why formats succeed on one platform and fail on another.
  • Build a content engine that supports a house of brands—keeping each brand’s voice distinct while maintaining a coherent umbrella story.
  • Direct case study production so every client engagement ends with a case study worth reading—and worth winning the next project.
  • Own web presence strategy across garden3d sites: messaging, what work is showcased, how capabilities are communicated, and keeping decks/collateral current as the work evolves.
  • Run editorial ownership for Substack, the podcast, and transparency publications (including the open-source P&L we release annually).
  • Capture what happens IRL—Index, USB Club, and community moments—and transform it into share-worthy work.
  • Produce, paid & distribute like a strategist and a producer: direct producers/editors/freelancers, manage multi-workstream output without dropping quality.
  • Own paid spend on Meta/Instagram and where our audiences are: build audiences, run A/B/C testing on narrative and ad sets, and report on budget-to-results.
  • Deliver data-driven reporting with clear ROI thinking: audience growth, engagement, leads, and pipeline influenced—then translate results into next-quarter plans.
  • Show up in person when it matters: events, conferences, talks, Index programming, and the gatherings where our world connects—then bring back stories worth publishing.
  • Model garden3d values: partnership, curiosity, and accountability—so the creatives you lead do their best work.

Responsibilities & Mandates (Our Non-Negotiables)

Quality never less than 8/10. We aspire for 10/10, celebrate 9/10, and never publish anything that’s not an 8/10—visually, narratively, and in production quality. You’ll hold this bar across every format, and you’ll rather kill a piece than let a 6 out the door.

Your feedback should make work better and faster—without micromanaging the people who make it.

  • Social That Stops the Scroll: maintain a current read on each platform’s mechanics and audience expectations; short-form video is first-class craft here.
  • A House of Brands, Each in Its Own Voice: manage multiple messaging columns at once—distinct brand tone, coherent umbrella narrative.
  • Case Study Production: own the production line end-to-end—interview, narrative shaping, art direction, shipping.
  • Websites That Put Our Best Foot Forward: own strategy and messaging clarity so prospective clients and hires instantly understand what each studio does.
  • Editorial Ownership: run the calendar, standards, and growth for Substack/podcast/transparency publications.
  • Producing, Paid & Distribution: coordinate brief clarity and deadlines across many workstreams; execute paid testing thoughtfully.
  • Data-Driven Reporting & ROI: report plainly and plan forward based on numbers.
  • Presence IRL: choose touchpoints worth the time and ensure we show up as ourselves.
  • Culture: lead with trust, transparency, and real recognition—taste and accountability that rub off.

Special Projects You May Lead (Examples)

In addition to day-to-day responsibilities, you may spearhead or support initiatives like:

  • Turning garden3d TK into a real experimental media brand: books, screenplays, music, and shows.
  • Growing the podcast into a property with its own audience.
  • Launching campaigns for new Index spaces, USB Club drops, and community programs.
  • Making our annual open-source P&L release a media moment.
  • Standing up a small content studio that serves all four studios’ new-business pipelines.
  • Building the systems (and hiring) that let us publish more often—while aiming for 10/10 content and never dropping below 8/10.

What We’re Looking For

This role is ideal for someone who wants to make a meaningful impact in a growing, dynamic company—and who can move with autonomy, clarity, and high taste.

Must Have

  • 8+ years in marketing, content, or brand leadership, with real time inside creative studios, agencies, or founder-led companies.
  • A portfolio that proves exceptional taste: visual, narrative, and tone of voice.
  • Design background and/or fluency: comfortable producing visual assets at the required quality level in Figma when necessary.
  • Experience owning a company web presence: site strategy, messaging, and keeping capabilities collateral current.
  • Exceptional project management: content calendars, production pipelines, and multiple workstreams at once.
  • Short-form video fluency: shipped work for Reels, TikTok, and Shorts, and can explain why pieces performed.
  • Comfort managing creatives and producers (editors, designers, animators, freelancers) and consistently improving output.
  • Hands-on paid social experience on Meta/Instagram (and beyond): audience building, budget ownership, and A/B/C testing across narrative and ad sets.
  • PESO fluency: practical understanding of where paid/earned/shared/owned each earn their keep.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience producing a brand’s IRL presence: events, conferences, talks, and turning them into content.
  • Podcast/audio production experience.
  • Comfort managing multiple messaging columns in a house of brands.
  • Newsletter growth experience—especially Substack.
  • Community & events marketing: programming, launches, IRL moments.
  • Photography, motion, or editing chops of your own.
  • Fluency with AI production tools, plus the judgment to know when not to use them.
  • A press/media network (traditional PR isn’t the focus, but relationships help).
  • Experience marketing to design & engineering decision-makers at companies like our clients.
  • Book publishing or long-form media experience.
  • Experience scaling a services business story into a consumer-scale audience.

Who You Are

  • You’re happy
